Foaming Wells: What's Happening & How to Fix It

The problem:

Foam is one of the most disruptive conditions a wellfield can face — and one of the hardest for traditional pumps to handle. Landfill leachate foams for a mix of reasons: surfactants, organic acids, and the aggressive gas activity happening inside the well. Once foam forms, it behaves nothing like the liquid your pump was designed to move.

Why traditional pumps struggle:

Most pneumatic pumps rely on a mechanical float to trigger each cycle — the float rises with liquid, trips a valve, and the pump fires. Foam breaks that mechanism in a few ways:

It's too light to trip the float

Foam has a fraction of the density of leachate, so it can surround a float without ever lifting it to its trip point. The pump stalls mid-cycle, unable to fill or discharge.

It tricks the pump into pumping air, not liquid

When a pump draws in foam instead of dense liquid, compressed air blows through the spongy pockets instead of displacing real volume. The pump may cycle rapidly without actually moving anything.

It leaves residue behind

As foam collapses, it leaves a sticky, soap-like film on internal components like check valves, exhaust ports, and seals, causing them to bind or stop sealing properly over time.

Adjustable delay settings

In foaming conditions, a longer delay (typically 10–15 seconds) gives foam time to settle inside the pump chamber between cycles, rather than being pushed through while still foaming. See how to adjust your delay setting → here.

Slower, steadier dewatering

Foam often shows up when a well is dewatered too quickly. Lowering your pump's cycle rate can prevent foam from forming in the first place, not just manage it after the fact.

Exhaust valve configuration for extreme cases

In persistent foaming conditions, the quick exhaust valve can be rerouted back into the well seal, or a secondary quick exhaust valve can be installed above the standard one, to keep foam from bypassing the diaphragm. Watch: liquid/foam at the exhaust valve → here.
