Scale: What's Happening & How to Fix It
The problem:
Mineral scale, primarily calcium carbonate, along with biological deposits from landfill leachate, is one of the most common reasons a pneumatic pump slows down or fails over time. As scale builds up inside a pump, it doesn't just reduce performance. It changes how the pump physically operates, often in ways that are hard to notice until the pump stops working altogether.
Most pneumatic pumps rely on check valves, floats, and actuator rods to control each cycle, and every one of those components is vulnerable to scale buildup.
Scale crusts on check balls, flaps, and valve seats prevent a tight seal. Fluid leaks back, the pump loses prime, and cycling becomes erratic, firing without actually moving liquid.
Crystalline deposits build up on floats and actuator rods, adding weight and friction. Over time, the mechanism can no longer flip cleanly between fill and discharge, and the pump slows or stalls.

Scale can affect the Ultra X too. No pump is completely immune to it. But because the Ultra X has no float and no moving parts for scale to weigh down or seize, it holds up significantly longer before scale becomes a problem.
Traditional pumps depend on a float sliding freely to trigger each cycle, and scale is exactly the kind of buildup that stops a float from moving as intended. The Ultra X's titanium sensor probes aren't subject to that same failure mode, so the pump keeps running well past the point where a float-based pump would start struggling.
If scale does eventually build up enough to affect performance, the Ultra X can typically be cleaned right at the wellhead. Remove three bolts, slide the pump body off, and clean the titanium sensor probes with a stainless steel wire brush or Scotch-Brite pad. No pulling the pump apart for a full rebuild.
Like with other stall conditions, the Ultra X will shut off air rather than continue an ineffective cycle, and automatically attempt to restart every 20 minutes without needing to be manually bumped.
